Diploma Course in Paint Technology

The Colour Society in collaboration with Indian Paint Association have started a one year part time Diploma Course in Paint Technology from 1977-78 for the benefit of personnel from the Surface Coating Industry. The course includes topics such as Basic Polymer Chemistry, Raw Materials, Manufacture, Testing, Application of Decorative & Industrial Paints, Printing Inks, etc.

Syllabus for the Color Society- IPA Diploma Course In Paint Technology (2010-2011)

PAPER  I

INTRODUCTION TO PAINT TECHNOLOGY AND PAINT RAW MATERIALS (PIGMENTS)
  • Introduction definition and classification of paints and coatings.
  • Introduction to functions of paints, varnishes, lacquers and enamels.
  • Essential and specific functions of coatings.
  • Main constituents of paints: binder (resin), pigments, solvents and additives and their functions.
  • Current status of paint industry and future scenario.
  • Pollution, toxicity and health hazards in surface coatings industry.
  • Environment and user-friendly coatings.
  • Types of pigments: Organic, inorganic, specialty pigments and extenders.
  • Chemistry, manufacture (TiO2, chromes, Prussian blue, carbon black, azo pigments, phthalocyanine etc.). Uses of typical pigments, surface treatment of pigments.
  • Testing of pigments.
  • General concepts of color and its evaluation.


PAPER  II

PAINT RAW MATERIALS
  • Polymers and Resins, Solvents and Additives.
  • Basics of polymer science: Definition of monomer, polymer etc.
  • Concepts of functionality and polymer classification.
  • Characterization of polymer; molecular weight distribution, rheology of polymeric systems.
  • Methods of polymerization and ignition system/catalysts.
  • Chemistry and application of :- vegetable oils and modified oils, cellulose and its esters, rosin and its derivatives, phenolics,  amino resins, polyesters, alkyds, epoxies, polyamides, silicones, polyurethanes, acrylics, chlorinated rubber and vinyl’s etc.
  • Theory of film formation.
  • Testing of resins and functional group analysis.

TECHNOLOGY OF PAINTS
  • Paint formulation principles.
  • Architectural coatings, interior and exterior types.
  • Industrial coatings: automotive (OEM and refinishing). General engineering coatings.
  • Marine coatings, maintenance coatings, powder coatings.
  • Coatings of wood, plastics, leather and paper etc.
  • Paint manufacture and equipments.
  • Testing of paints  (liquid paints, and films)

PAINT APPLICATION AND EVALUATION
  • Corrosion theory
  • Types of substrates methods of surface preparation and pretreatment.
  • Methods of paint application: brushing, application by roller, spraying (conventional, airless, hot spraying & electrostatic spraying), dipping, flow coating, curtain coating, roller coating, coil coating, barreling and centrifugal coating, powder coating, electrodeposition.
  • Painting specification and inspection.
  • Defects- causes and remedies.
  • Application problems, trouble shooting and application safety.
